Learning Through Employment

Learning Through Employment is a framework which allows individuals already in employment to work towards a university level qualification relevant to their specific area of work. Its main feature is that the majority of learning takes place through active and reflective engagement with work activities, underpinned by the appropriate academic knowledge and skills. Courses can be tailored around any subject and are negotiated between the learner, the university and the employer. The framework is for those who are employed and want to use their work activities as a vehicle for higher level learning and to gain a university award.

Good Practice examples

The majority of HE-level work-based learning at the University of South Wales involves either work-based projects or work placements both of which aim to increase graduate employability. There are also work-based learning programmes for individuals already in employment providing them with the opportunity and flexibility to obtain a higher education qualification focused around their specific area of work. In addition there is a generic framework for ‘Learning through Employment’ which can be tailored around any subject and which aims to equip individuals already in employment with HE-level skills relevant to their work.
