Postgraduate Certificate in Developing Professional Practice in HE (PgCDPPHE)

The Postgraduate Certificate in Developing Professional Practice, (PgCDPPHE) is a main plank in the University’s professional support for new teaching staff (and others with responsibility for supporting teaching and learning) and aims to provide these colleagues with knowledge, understanding and skills which will enable them to teach and support students with reasonable initial competence, while also establishing a basis from which they can develop greater proficiency and, ultimately, excellence in their practice as they gain additional experience.

Staff required to complete this course

The University requires that all new teaching colleagues will undertake a qualification in the practice of Higher Education which is accredited by the Higher Education Academy, unless they meet the following criteria:

  • already a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
  • sufficient higher education teaching experience (four years full time equivalent), prior to appointment.
  • a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education. NB: a PgCE or Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Further Education, ACL (adult and community learning) or schools is not considered equivalent to a Postgraduate Certificate in HE;

If a new academic does not hold any of the above, they will be contacted by Lyndsey Muir – the Course Leader for PgCDPPHE – who will arrange for their enrolment onto the course.

About the course

It is recognised that members of staff are likely to enrol on the PGCDPPHE award as students with different academic backgrounds and experiences and their own distinctive personal repertoires of knowledge, skills, understanding and competence. The course, therefore, defines principles and outcomes and presents a general core curriculum for study but allows each individual student to identify how they might best utilise this curriculum (and associated study) to secure their personal professional development needs.

The course is run over one year and is available as a taught course with lectures being delivered on every other Wednesday. This year, due to increased demand there are two face to face cohorts currently running – one commenced in October 2016, the other in February 2017. Workshop details for the February cohort can be found here:

PgCDPPHE Workshop Programme

Also for 2016-17, an online course – fully distance learning – commenced in November 2016.

The course consists of three modules:-

  • Developing Effective Learning, Teaching and Assessment Practice in HE.
  • Understanding and developing the Learner Journey.
  • Using Technology to enhance learning and teaching.

Changes to the course in 2017

Please note that this course is currently in its last intake and will be replaced in September 2017 by the newly validated Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (PgCLTHE). More information about this course will be provided shortly. The requirement for new staff to undertake this course will remain the same.
