Blackboard

Blackboard logo

Blackboard is the primary virtual learning environment (VLE) used here at the University of South Wales.

Each of your modules and courses has a presence in Blackboard and by effectively using the online area for each of them you will ensure that your students will have access to relevant and timely information, resources and announcements via the web, anytime and anywhere.

Blackboard is changing

In December 2021 USW moves to a SAAS (software as a service) version of Blackboard Learn. This version is almost identical to the version we use now and USW staff should not encounter any disruption as this change is made. However, when creating new content staff will notice a difference in the Text editor. This text editor appears wherever you can add and format text, such as in course content items, assignments, tests, discussions, blogs and journals.

Previous version of the text editor:

Further guidance on using the new text editor can be accessed via the Blackboard Help website.

Known reported issues:

Issue: Users of the Edge browser cannot open files attached to content in Blackboard

What does it look like?

Edge browser users may experience an error when opening linked files in Blackboard. Users will either see a ‘404 error’;

or the Word online application will open but will display the message "Sorry, there was a problem and we can't open this document. If this happens again, try opening the Document in Microsoft Word".

What can I do?

Blackboard are working on a fix, but in the meantime Edge users should use the following workaround:

1. In the Edge browser, open Settings;

Three dots in the top right hand corner of Edge = menu. Edge settings.jpg

2. Select Downloads;

3. Set Open Office files in the browser to Off (white not blue).
